Their impending breakup seems truly inevitable now. The next morning, Toby brings Kate coffee in bed and presents his very detailed plan for their day, which includes a stop at a cocktail party thrown by his boss before a fancy romantic restaurant. Kate is hesitant to jump into the plans, looking for something more relaxed like they used to do. So they hit the town, Toby shows her around the city and they spend some much needed time together. Along the way Kate calls the kids while Toby is on a work call.

Toby ends up taking Kate to an open house and presents his idea that Kate and the family consider moving to San Francisco permanently. Toby has been looking into the house for quite some time, but he never told Kate, which leaves her feeling blindsided and overwhelmed. In the present we get to watch Kate listen tearfully to Rebecca's big Thanksgiving speech about moving forward and to be fearless. The next day, Kate and Toby pack up from the cabin and Kate suggests she visit Toby in San Francisco to see how that would feel so they could have a weekend together alone for the first time in ages. At home, Kate brings her kids to the park and goes to work, thriving in her routine. Kate has a girls night with Madison and admits she misses the old version of Toby.

Madison does her best to alleviate Kate's anxieties, but the trip gets off to a rough start when Toby is too busy with work to pick her up from the airport. It's brutal to hear Toby explain that the old version of himself that Kate loved so much was a coping mechanism for a miserable, insecure, self-loathing person. But what's nice about "The Hill" is that it roots itself in the positives of this situation as much as the negatives. When Randall and Beth were having martial problems back in season three, the show framed divorce as the worst possible thing that could happen to them.

Here, however—particularly because of the flashfoward forewarnings—there's hope to the idea of Kate and Toby splitting up and getting to live the lives that make them happiest. Their time together allowed them both to become better, more self-actualized people. But that doesn't mean they need to cling to their relationship if it's no longer serving them. Kate tells Toby how he took away this emptiness inside of her, but the one thing making her sad now is their relationship.

The next morning, Kate comes out into the kitchen to find coffee and Toby apologizes for not being upfront with her about the house and the job offer, nothing that his job in San Francisco does mean a lot to him. And so, Toby concludes that the only way their family will work is if they live together in San Francisco. The thing is Kate doesn't just have a problem with uprooting their lives and moving to San Francisco — she has an increasingly growing issue with who her husband has become as of late. He is no longer the lovable goofball she fell in love with. He's much more serious and into his job and status.

Most important, it seems, he wouldn't get caught dead in a Hawaiian shirt. That might be a pro to most, but not Kate Pearson. She misses this old Toby (not to be confused with Old Toby in the flash-forward, Jesus Christ, this show) so much so that she has apparently Tyler Durden–ed him. Kate is a fan ofFight Club, and she's been imagining hanging out with the version of her husband she married. I don't think that's whatFight Clubis about, but we don't have the time.

It is one of the most bizarre thingsThis Is Ushas done, and I would like to send it back, please. Like, we're really doing "Fat Guy in a Little Coat" right now? If the point was to show us that the old version of Toby was annoying as hell and the new version is kind of a dick, mission accomplished, I guess.

Past seasons revealed that the couple reconnected many years after Jack's death via social media, but that's about it. Fogelman said after the Season 5 finale that Rebecca and Miguel's love story will play a large role in Season 6, including their wedding, which Moore has already planned out.

But, the creator confirmed to Variety, it'll also tie up some loose story threads relating to the past — most importantly, how widow Rebecca Pearson came to be married to her late husband's best friend, Miguel . He says they should have talked about the LA offer. And how he felt desperate to feel valued at his job.

He finally is not just taking up space and neither is Kate. He loves her and their family but there are logistics and they have to move to San Francisco because there are no other options. The undercurrent of both of their points of view is that Kate and Toby really like the lives they've carved out for themselves in L.A.

Kate feels fulfilled by being a working mom with a meaningful job and family close by. And Toby feels fulfilled living in a cool city with a high-status job that makes him feel valued and important. He's much more in the wrong here for having lied about the L.A. Job offer and for trying to manipulatively get his way without talking things through with Kate. But this is more so an issue of two people growing apart than it is a situation where one person is a complete villain.
